IMHO, there was a much more highly publicized event that occurred yesterday that could have been responsible for the drop - Another round of price cuts. Paul's favorite site, www.pricewatchit.com , shows continued fall of prices for 550/600 speed grades.

Also, note ebnews.com

"A company spokesman cited continued manufacturing improvements as the reason behind the Pentium III price cuts, and said the reductions were necessary to secure wins during the lucrative holiday period. "

This is the first time that I recollect Intel spokesman saying they are doing price cuts to get design wins. This gotto shake up a few of the die-hard INTC longs.
