It is necessary for a species to remain a species for there to be periodic inbreeding. During sexual coupling the chromosomes line up according to matching of genes and gene markers. If each generation no longer breeds with a partner who shared the same ancesor then the members of the species would begin to drift in genes to the point where the chromosomes would no longer align and reproduction would not be possible. It's this kind of genetic isolation which causes groups to spin off into new species.
