What is a "private school"? Do you mean a Baptist Bible Academy chartered initially to keep kids from having to attend integrated schools? Do you mean a New England Prep School that costs more than $18,000 a year, like Andover? Do you mean a Yeshiva? The term is meaningless out of context.

Some places the public schools are so bad it's a dereliction of your duty as a parent not to send your kid to private school. Others, the public schools are excellent. I attended a Catholic girls school that didn't even have a science teacher, the nun that taught science had died and there was no one to replace her. The gym teacher tried to teach science, but she didn't understand it very well.

Here is a list of the standard course offerings for high schools in Fairfax County, Virginia. This is the minimum, schools can offer more if they want. Ben is taking C++ in ninth grade, for example.
