The AMTX/ADSL-DMT Switzerland trials have been recently deemed successful for distances of up to 5km. DMT is a modulation technology that enhances ADSL by permitting the transport of information at rates up to 10 Mbps downstream over copper access. ADSL can sustain speeds up to 640 Kbps upstream--a transmission rate suitable for sending commands to control a movie on demand. VDSL is an extension of the DMT technology developed to enable speeds of 12 Mbps, 25 Mbps, and 50 Mbps over lines extending from Digital Loop Carrier interfaces to the local subscriber. These speeds are limited to shorter line lengths. It seems that it would be helpful to know the average distance of most homes/businesses in US and Europe away from an existing fiber backbone. Anyone know of any stats.?
