I understand the fundamentals of it. I think there are obvious situations where it isn't always true, however....such as in growth companies that are experiencing exponential growth (MFNX). AAPL is a good example of where this description wouldn't make any sense whatsoever.
While I don't disagree with the conceptual basis, there are always flaws in the theory. In this case, I'd say the short interest is based on skepticism surrounding the ABOV merger, and isn't coincident w/the price. If it was, then short interest should have been much higher at other points in time.
The other thing you have to consider is the volume traded. If volume thins out (as it does at times) short interest may look excessive when it really isn't.
