"centering" mechanism
An asexual reproducing organism will remain centered because there it contains the only genes that the offspring will have. There is great variety is sexually reproducing life because many genes can be stored in other members of the species only to be reintroduced in later generations. (There are more genes available to a sexual species than any one member of the species contains).
