Neville,

I see that AT&T has come up with another one of somebody else's novel ideas. Well, this is not the first time they've thought about sharing some of their facilities and processing power by renting it out. Earlier this decade they had a thing going with Novell. Do you recall Netware Connect?

And even earlier, during the Eighties, they contemplated leasing out - for time sharing/teleprocessing purposes - excess Information Networking (IN) data base infrastructure which was primarily comprised of some older IBM mainframes and their very own home-grown 2B2 midrange units that their now-defunct computer division rolled out.

[Here's some helpful advice: Don't bother trying to corroborate any of this by asking an ATT salesperson. They wont remember or they were probably still attending frat parties during these earlier exploits by T.]

Last time I looked, it took T about four calendar months to get a 1,500 mile T3 line installed for a Top-3 Bank (an extremely high-priority customer). And in this instance they were using TCG local loops (who they own) on both ends, so they had no ILEC to blame but themselves for the delays.

Does this demonstrate the kind of preparedness required to play in the Internet game? If you ask me, T has been at the plate for a long time, and they fouling 'em off. The count still stands at "no balls and two strikes." Does anyone think that they can get to first base this time around? I think they can. But only if they wait long enough to see how the kids do it, first.

Regards, Frank Coluccio
