Bottom line not the bottom line

"People will be paying more attention to
license growth than bottom line ," said Steve
Abrahamson, an analyst with Volpe Brown
Whelan & Co. in San Francisco, just before
Oracle posted its earnings.

In the company's conference call in June,
executives said investors had reason to be cautious about
software sales in the current quarter, thanks to the year 2000
computer glitch.

But long term, Oracle has been bullish about software sales,
says Melissa Eisenstat, an analyst with CIBC World Markets
Corp. in New York.

Oracle's sales were strong in August, says Bob Austrian, an
analyst with Banc of America Securities in San Francisco.
