Time Warner Appoints Burke as CEO of Digital News
New York, Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Time Warner Inc., the world's largest media company, said it appointed William Burke as president and chief executive of news and information for its digital media unit.
Burke, president of Time Warner's TBS Superstation and Turner South, will begin his new job Oct. 4. He'll report to Richard Bressler, Time Warner's former chief financial officer who is now spearheading the company's expansion on the Internet.
Time Warner Digital Media, under Bressler, is creating five Web sites that will offer e-mail and other services and focus on specific themes such as news and information, which Burke will now oversee, and business, entertainment and sports. The news and information site will build on the existing online content of CNN and Time Inc.
``It's a complex business plan because we are trying to marshal all the resources of Time Warner' into building the news and information hub, Burke said in an interview. ``We have a lot of content at our disposal.'
Bressler has been assembling management to help lead the company's digital media efforts. The company hasn't disclosed when it will begin to introduce these sites.
``In order to maximize and capitalize on the opportunities in news and information, it's important to put the right person in early enough to lead that effort,' Bressler said.
Burke supervises all operations and development for TBS Superstation and Turner South. Previously he was vice president and general manager of Turner Classic Movies.
Time Warner shares fell 1 5/8 to 60 1/8.
