I don't know of any independence movement in West Timor, which was not governed by Portugal: the whole issue is a consequence of colonial geography, not physical geography.

An independent East Timor would be surrounded on three sides by Indonesia, and if Indonesia was inclined to take it back an outside force would be required practically in perpetuity.
