Caxton, Q plans software upgrades for phones and base stations. Sort of Win98, Win2000 thing.
Why do you think they will have a long term advantage in this area? Msft got consumers to use their system and thus forced developers to use their operating system. The larger the consumer base the greater was their dominance. I think this type of loyalty is harder to earn in the phone arena. Consumers will have very little interface with software and won't know what is being used.
As for wireless, mentioned by Jacobs in press release, I don't know why qualcomm will do better with that than hand set division. The lack of ability to compete in hand sets even with Sony as partner makes me concerned about the future. I hope Qcom lays out a plan tomorrow that renews my faith. Recently, Gregg Powers stated that the hand set sales were the razor blades of this industry. Qcom is selling that division if I understood todays release.
I know royalties will be strong, but I do not see how those can last and cover research alone. Qcom needs another viable product. Chip sets will become a commodity in the next few years. In my opinion, the asics are not that unique and I am certain there are lots of companies willing to build them for a slim profit margin. If there are only one or two dominate phone makers, they will bring the chip costs down. This could become a buyers market that makes asics into commodities. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of faith in qcom management, but I need to see a clearer picture of their vision for the future and why it will justify expectations for earnings growth.
