so far most "free" services require something. for example, in europe most have heard about freeserve and the free internet service they offer, but what they fail to mention is the person is charged a toll call for the local call, hence you pay per minute connected.

even in the u.s. where one checks to see how much a bundled package costs, they will give you a "free" internet account for a certain amount of ld. the new threat will not be from ecn's, but from free trading.

free phone service has meant a two minute call with a commercial.

i would not be surprised if someone offers free trading, but with other attachments such as only market orders or you must have a checking, visa with minimum balance....

netzero.com com does offer free internet service with a banner, but so far they are losing money and the ads do not cover the costs. so what will they do? go ipo.

point is, there are costs to infrastructure and people, and some where they charge you to make money, nothing is "free".

of course short term it could cause selling, and this should in theory also effect ecn's in a negative way.
