The high middle ages would have been fun if you were royalty or clergy, not much if you weren't. 50's America was a good deal better, thought still with numerous difficulties for those who didn't have conformity high on their list of priorities. But to restore that commitment to placidity at all costs we would probably need another depression and another world war, which would hardly be worth it, especially if there wasn't anybody left to be placid. I don't think, given the pace of technological and scientific change, that basic social institutions can sustain that kind of placidity any more. They couldn't sustain it then: the 60's harvested what the '50s sowed.
