Following are excerpts from an article in Electronic Engineering May 27 edition. what do you think

The microwave relocation plan for early Block A and B winners has turned
into a virtual extortion racket. Relocations are proposed by the PCS
companies, but many of the existing users of PCS frequencies are often the
same municipal authorities who must agree to the plans for relocating their
own bands. As microcell antennas proliferate over the urban landscape, new
concepts for shrinking sizes and co-locating facilities must be developed
to minimize disputes with municipal governments.

"Nothing is ever certain in build-out, as we're discovering in the New York
City area in spades," said Mark Vonarx, director of business development at
Omnipoint Corp. (Colorado Springs, Colo.). "PCS winners had better prepare
for a much longer and tougher build-out period than they may have planned
for."

To reduce the size of individual antennas, superconductor company Conductus
Inc. (Sunnyvale) is working with Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs arm on a
cryogenically cooled filter and amplifier subsystem, which could be
installed in tower-top PCS electronics packages. Duncan MacMillan, vice
president of marketing at Conductus, said his company had already worked
with the CTI-Cyrogenics division of Helix Technology Corp. to reduce the
size of cryo-units for a low-noise PCS basestation. Conductus and Bell Labs
had collaborated on a interference-reduction filter with sharp frequency
response, and the two companies were now expanding their research to look
at complete basestation antenna subsystems with multiple receiver circuits
and expanded transmit filters.
