slacker, re: "I really dont have much knowledge of Intel and would love someone else's view...."
Highly recommend "Inside Intel" which ought to be in paperback by now--maybe 4/5 years old. This is no "puff piece", the mighty INTC didn't get to the top of the heap playing paddy-cake. Some very negative revelations.
OTOH, I think your take is absolutely right: they are premiere silicon shapers [manufacturers]. They "live" right at the nexus of IPRs and the real world. Which is why I'm less concerned about industrial espionage than most: it's one thing to have the blueprints, the trick is building the damn things. You guys know how much I love BatWing but even I have to admit they've pulled off some really neat engineering tricks over the years: if MOT can't build these little CDMA ASIC critters, they must be a real bear.
No worries about the Chinese, Diamond H. They're just playing a little post New Zealand poker: no WTO guest card so they'll raise hell and not let any technology inside the Great Wall for a month or two, or until it's their turn to ante, whichever comes first. SM
