Yep, I'm more partial to the idea of a completely open minded, democratic culture.
And if you disagreed with accepted opinion, there would be a vote on whether or not you are right. And if you don't get the majority, you just say "oh well", and take your morning Prozac.
The founding fathers based the idea of the constitutional republic on ancient Greece. There were a myriad of city states, each of which was allowed to flower with its own knowledge and art. Had there been a democracy instead, we would have ended up with the vanila political correctness that we have today in America.
To avoid situtation like you descibe for the Balklans, the fathers decided we did need a federal goverment, with LIMITED powers. The role of the federal goverment should ONLY be those duties explicity given to it in the constitution.
The short list of these duties are 1) maintain a federal military 2) conduct foriegn trade 3) guarentee free trade and free movement between the states 4) decide on the constituionality of state and federal law A couple other minor issues also.
This is why we do not need, and I do not want, a social democracy like we have now. I do not want to be politically correct. I want to have the freedom to do as I wish, within the confines of my community. What is wrong with that? |
