as a software salesperson, the point,i believe, was about displacing
incy's database business,not chip business.the apples to apples comparison would be celera's displacing incy.the value of accurate,easy to use data is enormous. the cost to replicate such data,e.g. collect,maintain,manipulate, is large.whether people will switch to a new database,if it existed,is an open question.whether the data in the database is a commodity or not, i have no idea,though the investment threat is that it some day could be.based on rman's writings,i suspect not.but the software built around it to access,manipulate, etc. is certainly not a commodity.this is not like switching from netscape to explorer.
