Dave, you're right about many things you say in your post (although the transition to Rambus is much harder than any of the other transitions). One thing is clear: In the pre-Intel Rambus annointment days the dram vendors had become fragmented and did not work together well and it was not clear that they could continue to evolve memory technology in a way that would be satisfactory to the industry as a whole. However, Rambus has caused one significant success already: they've caused the dram makers to standardize the evolutionary path in a way that would never have happened otherwise. While there are still several alternatives (VC, Sldram, etc), most of the non-Rambus efforts are now unified in standards and this has resulted in the evolutionary path being stronger than it had been before.

Even though I frequently criticize Rambus on this thread, for most of the last 10 years I have been a Rambus advocate. I pretty much felt that the dram makers had begun too brain dead to continue the evolutionary path. Without Rambus that might have been true. But now they are doing a good job. I think that they can carry through PC133, DDR, DDR-II in a smooth, low risk way that delivers adequate performance at the lowest possible cost.
