I was thinking about what Tim said and the proposal for the Palm spinoff does seem like it will screw shareholders. IPO and options people will get the pop, then as soon as shareholders get their piece the PALM stock price will tumble on mass sales. Shareholders then get the smallest benefit from PALM and are left with less attractive 3COM stock.

What if...3COM spun 60% of PALM off to current COMS holders PRE-IPO, sold 20% to the public in the IPO itself, and kept a 20% stake? Wouldn't this be much more equitable and desirable for COMS holders? It would

- give current COMS holders an equal shot at the IPO pop
- retain some value for current COMS holders from this growth market (why not? doesn't 3COM have equity stakes in many other growth companies - including AvantGo, which is basically software for PALM?)

Thoughts?
