With today's announcement by QCOM that it is planning to exit
the handset business, it would be easy to assume that this is
just part of their long term plan put in place years ago. I
think this is the furthest from the truth. Qualcomm never
thought that they could make any real money on ASICs. That's why
the ASIC group wasn't properly staffed and run by a bunch of
yahoos until just a couple of years ago. I think Qualcomm was
trying to make a serious run at the infrastructure and handset
markets. That's where most of the employees were. Once the
handset business is sold, Qualcomm will probably have only 20%
of their employees left. As a long term QCOM investor, I'd like
to believe that what we are witnessing this year is part of a
long term plan, but that's just not accurate.
