Walt,

You need to look at THQ and the whole interactive entertainment sector like Coke looks at the stomach. Coke wants to establish a market share percentage of the human stomach around the world. For THQ and others, this can be transferred in a macro sense to "disposable time" or in a micro sense to "use of your television set". A TV that is watching movies (DVD) is not playing games (although I was able to set up picture-in-picture to do both :)) Therefore, in a macro sense, people will either buy or rent DVD's or buy or rent games. They are mutually exclusive based on both disposable time and disposable income. That is why, IMHO, it is a bad idea to incorporate a DVD player in a game machine.

Secondly, and this is important, no hardware company has ever been able to win consecutive generations. Sony is clearing aiming at convergence with their new machine which is why Microsoft is stepping into the ring. They also parade around the fact that the processor in the PSX2 is 20 or 200 (sorry, I forgot which useless number) times more powerful than a pentium 3. The new PSX2 might as well be called VAIO cause that is Sony's definite intent. And right now, I just don't see it.

Thanks for the rational and civilized debate,

Vic
