Just a quickie about GSM based WCDMA. First, GSM not only describes the air interface (which is TDMA based) but also the core network infrastructure....that's it in a nutshell. So WCDMA is intended to be overlayed GSM core networks (re-use). However, in many European countries, notably UK at the moment, they are trying to make sure new market entrants with UMTS will also be able to 'roam' on national 2G networks (their competitors) to make sure that there is no unfair advantage in coverage. Another point is that UMTS (like the whole IMT-2000 idea in the first place and still supposed to be) is in new spectrum, meaning that the GSM air-interface (at 900 and 1800) is likely to be around for a heck of a long time. Dual-mode handsets or whatever (GSM/UMTS), will therefore ensure that roll-out however slow will mean having voice access at least across the whole EU. As power users migrate to UMTS, it will create a vacuum for even lower cost services to the majority of the country(ies). Mika
