Libertarian position:
No public education.
Schools would, of course, teach what they (but hopefully what the parents) want...actually I neednt put "hopefully" because you would change schools if your child were not getting what you want him/her getting.
Standards? Not a government issue.
The private schools would most likely set up standards, much as professional organizations do today...might even "rate" schools as "accredited" or "unaccredited" according to that particular associations desire (E.G. A religious school organization would no doubt have different standards and curriculum desires than an atheist or non relgious school organization).
I'd certainly have standards of my own for my own children and (if I were able) would probably home school...or run a small school for my immediate neighborhood for people with similar ideas.
