Dave - Mika is entirely correct.

Mika wrote "GSM not only describes the air interface (which is TDMA based) but also the core network infrastructure....that's it in a nutshell. So WCDMA is intended to be overlayed GSM core networks (re-use)"

WCDMA air interface will replace the GSM air interface. The GSM core network infrastructure remains intact.
