I don't think any religion could survive a tenure as State Church and emerge with any spirituality left. Catholicism died as a religion with the conversion of Constantine, it has been a political edifice ever since. Whatever spirituality exists in Catholic worship is brought by the worshippers, and exists in spite of the edifice, not because of it.
