They were Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. Bud was the only animal that I have ever known that was empathetic, he felt the emotions of others. He used to let the tame ducks pluck his fur but he was a good retriever. I'll never forget when a couple of union guys bothered us and he backed them down. On the other hand he did a lot of nursing home duty. Every geezer he was introduced to got a smile.

Smile. I took him to the U of I vet school for a demonstration and the girls in the class loved him. Demonstration was him running wide open and I toot the whistle and he looks to me for directions. The girls petted him and he smiled. Really smiled.

I took him to a trial when he was a pup at the Bush Wildlife place. We stayed at the Sheraton in O'Fallon. We both had the same dinner via room service. That's the way it was, I went, he went, I ate, he ate. He loved to help my wife take care of the horses. Carried buckets, and what other chores he could do.
