Terrence this is a good point. Every Christian does have such
a struggle going on. I have seen it in David as well. At one
point he claimed to have gone into his closet (an external
representation of himself) and asked Jesus for guidance. Symbolically
he is saying that he does not trust his judgment and is trying to
replace his own self by the abstract self of Christ. The problem
is that the position (as you well understand) is untenable.
Whether they admit to it or not everyone needs a basic fundamental
trust in his own self. They also have egos but can not stand
the sight of them because it reminds them just how empty
their rhetoric is.
