I am not within any fold, but I do not disrespect those who are. Our condition as human beings is more often to judge the credibility of various authorities or witnesses than to independently verify. There are many things I will never see, many experiments I will never perform, but I still claim to know various things because of the reliability of the sources. Those who concede the authority of the Church make a judgment that perhaps you and I have not made, but it is not clear that they are wrong, and it is no more a "crutch" than my reliance on an atlas to find my way in the world, or an encyclopedia to check facts, or a history book to tell me what has gone before me. No one is "on his own"...
