If you are lost in the woods and a backwoods-looking sort of person comes up to you, you would naturally assume that the person is familiar enough with the area to help. If an unctuous fellow in a robe came up beside you, offered himself as your guide to the spiritual world, and suggested that you garnish his collection-plate, wouldn't you be worried about his credentials? I see no reason to assume that religion is in any way connected with any putative God. If I ever had cause to change my belief that God either does not exist or is not paying attention, I'm quite sure I would look for some form of direct approach. Ritual and hierarchy are a dangerous combination.
