RE: <First of all, what's your definition of "evolutionary," and why is the transition to RDRAM so "revolutionary" compared to previous advancements? To me, things change so quickly in the computing world, so it's hard for me to define anything as a "revolution.">

Evolutionary is EDO/PC66/PC100/PC133/DDR/DDR-II/???. At each transition a smooth step is made and there is minimum disruption and minimum risk. It essentually happens due to normal Moore's Law scaling. Minimum cost per bit is maintained. Test equipment is reuseable and is upgraded as test equipment undergoes its own version of "free upgrade" scaling. This evolutionary path stretches back 30 years and came about as cooperation between the dram makers and the box makers.

Rambus is not a "free upgrade" but requires significantly larger die area and new test equipment as well as new packaging technology.
