Corel ventures into Linux ring
Ottawa company trying to create an environment that 'looks more or less like Windows,' analyst says
By Greg Meckbach

Corel Corp. is set to release its own Linux distribution, but one analyst predicts
the Ottawa-based software maker does not intend to compete directly with either
Microsoft or other Linux vendors.

"The primary thrust of Corel is not to corner the Linux market," says Dan
Kusnetzky, research director for operating environments at Framingham,
Mass.-based International Data Corp. (IDC). "What they're trying to do is build a
Linux platform where Linux is largely invisible, that is, it looks more or less like
Windows and runs the applications very fast on a small machine."

Kusnetzky added it appears as if Corel is simply trying to sell more of its own
software by developing the Corel Linux Distribution (CLD), which is based on the
Debian/GNU distribution and is scheduled for final release at Comdex in Las
Vegas this November....
