Crosstainment, Previously Schneider Cybermind, Chooses DiskOnChip for Local Storage in Cutting-Edge Set-Top Box
Replacing the Hard Drive, DiskOnChip Provides Silent, Local Storage for JNT-Surfstation
FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 1999-- M-Systems Flash Disk Pioneers Ltd. (NASDAQ:FLSH - news), the leader in flash-based local storage solutions, Thursday announced that the company's DiskOnChip has been chosen by Crosstainment, a subsidiary of Infomatec AG, as the local storage solution for their new set-top box, the JNT-Surfstation.
M-Systems has already shipped 15,000 units of its 16MB DiskOnChip 2000 to Crosstainment and anticipates receiving orders for some more 100,000 units over the next two years.
Infomatec AG, a leading European IT enterprise, provides Java Network Technology (JNT), a basic platform for the operation of consumer devices, such as set-top boxes or the JNT-Surfstation. The Surfstation is the perfect alliance between Internet and TV, easy to install and simple to handle.
``DiskOnChip plays an essential role in allowing our cutting-edge JNT-Surfstation to rapidly move into living rooms worldwide,' said Jochen Kleine, member of the managing board of Crosstainment. ``We needed a reliable, cost-effective local storage device. DiskOnChip meets these requirements and unlike hard disks also offers silent operation -- a critical factor in a living room environment.'
Aryeh Mergi, executive vice president of marketing, M-Systems Ltd., said, ``The Surfstation incorporates what people desire in their homes in one compact device -- Internet access, MP3 audio features, e-mail, electronic shopping and home banking, just to mention a few. The use of DiskOnChip in this advanced consumer product demonstrates its growing acceptance as an industry standard, and the increased importance of local storage in Internet appliances.'
DiskOnChip Solution
A typical set-top box will store the operating system, device drivers and Internet clients (i.e. browsers, email, media players and security applets) on DiskOnChip, which provides the capability to update these files through the Internet as standards and applications evolve. In addition, information such as configuration files, cookies, favorite lists, local email folders and other data files are also stored in a single DiskOnChip device using partitioning technology.
A complete hardware/software flash disk solution, DiskOnChip together with M-Systems' flash file system management technology, TrueFFS, provides full hard disk emulation. This unique product adds flexibility, improves security, minimizes integration efforts, reduces engineering costs and shortens time-to-market. M-Systems' DiskOnChip features high reliability, low power consumption and small size.
DiskOnChip is forward and backward compatible, enabling new versions or higher capacity models to be used in existing DiskOnChip sockets without a need for system redesign. More than 300 embedded systems motherboards are shipping with DiskOnChip devices or built-in DiskOnChip sockets. DiskOnChip technology works with all major operating system environments including Windows CE, Windows NT, Windows NT Embedded, Linux, DOS, VxWorks, QNX, pSOS.
