NEW DELHI, Sept 15 (PTI)
The Indian press reaches 32.9 per cent of people in the country while television can be watched by 47.2 per cent, according to a recent survey on the media.
The Indian Readership Survey (IRS) '99, released by the Media Research Users Council (MRUS), also revealed that radio reached 17.7 per cent of the population and cinema just 12.8 per cent.
The internet proved to be the fastest growing medium and there are over 1.5 million users in India with its usage augmenting in over ten lakh towns, it said.
The Dainik Bhaskar led the readership of newspapers (urban and rural) with 94.5 lakh followed by Eenadu with 94.3 lakh readers, Daily Thanti 93.9, Malayala Manorama 90.6 lakh, Dainik Jagran (UP) 79.8 lakh, Lokmat 72.5 lakh, Matrubhumi 67.3 lakh, Navbharat Times 57.1 lakh, The Times of India 53.4 lakh and Anand Bazar Patrika 52.6 lakh, the survey said.
In urban India, it said, Dainik Bhaskar takes the first place with 63 lakh readers followed by the Times of India 52.3 lakh. Dainik Jagran (UP) with 49.1 lakh readership has moved up to third place. Others are Daily Thanthi 46.8 lakh, Eenadu 46.1 lakh, Navbharat Times 40.5 lakh, Lokmat 40.4 lakh, Punjab Kesari 39.5 lakh, Gujarat Samachar 35.3 lakh and Anand Bazar Patrika 33.1 lakh.
Dainik Bhaskar has 15 editions, seven each from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and one from Uttar Pradesh. These editions are being published from Indore, Bhopal, Gwalior, Satna, Jabalpur, Raipur and Bilaspur in Madhya Pradesh, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Kota, Ajmer, Bikaner and Sriganganagar in Rajasthan and Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh.
Among magazines,India Today (English) topped the list with 50.5 lakh readers followed by Grihshobha, while in the television viewership, DD was found to be the most watched channel followed by DD Metro and Zee TV.
For the IRS '99, an annual sample size of 2.13 lakh was covered, balanced equally over two rounds, and 741 towns and 2365 villages were surveyed. The reporting was based on a total sample size of 2,13,132 respondents. |
