I heard a similar story in Canada about 5-7 years ago. Most people never spend their pennies, and that's what causes a shortage. They should scrap the penny! Maybe the good economy has something to do with people not caring to spend their loose change. How about electronic payments, a lot of people use this method to pay for everything. In fact pay phones and parking meters use these cards as well.
