Father Terrence,
I was thinking along similar lines. I sympathize with David, but I also think it's important to see the end result of this religion (no, it's not heaven). Of course, there are other reasons why people go astray as well.
I was brought up as a Christian, and it took many long, painful years to free myself of the fear, guilt, and dysfunction it engendered. It is, as you say, a non-realistic philosophy. I think it's much better to be without answers than to hold to false ones that are at odds with our natures and our rational minds.
The most important things in raising our children are love, support, and guidance. Indoctrination, disapproval, ideology, and predudice are counter productive. It amazes me that this is so difficult for some people to see.
