A straight line segment, one meter in length, has its two end points on the perimeter of a circle (in other words, it is a chord). It is tangent to a smaller circle which is concentric with the first, outer circle which the line crosses.

What is the area of the ring between the two circles?

It is not necessary to know the radii of the circles to solve this problem. There are at least 3 ways of solving it, two of which are simple and short.
