Oracle Chief's 'Sayonara' Captures Second Consecutive Win at Maxi-Yacht Sailing Race
PR Newswire - September 16, 1999 14:00

PORTO CERVO, SARDINIA, Italy, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Oracle Chairman and CEO Larry Ellison sailed his 80-foot Sayonara to victory Saturday, successfully defending his title of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, the most prestigious race for the largest class of sailing yachts.

Saturday's race culminated five days of fierce competition on a twenty-five mile course through the bays and islands of the Sardinian coast west of Italy. Held every other year, the regatta was sailed in fair seas with winds from eight to twenty knots. In neck-and-neck racing, Ellison's Sayonara edged its competitors to win four of eight races, finishing first overall. Following Ellison were George Coumantaros' Boomerang, Alberto Roemmers' Alexia and Jim Dolan's Sagamore.

For Ellison, the victory follows several sailing achievements including four Maxi world championships, the Newport to Bermuda and Chicago-Mackinac races, and the harrowing and much-publicized Sydney to Hobart race late last year.
