KZNerd : Of course Intel has their boot on the throat of the chipmakers and the OEMs. They are going to create a perception that Rambus is necessary. If you think that perception is not important in any of this business, I have to heartily disagree with you. Intel gets to define what works and what doesn't because that big dog is in charge. Many people on this thread are technically savvy and understand the strengths and weakneses of different technologies, but most IT people don't. And the general public, no way. If Intel and Dell tout RDRAM rather than DDR, and nobody picks up the DDR flag and hypes it, it WILL make a difference in the long run.

O.K. Rambus gets a bad rap for helping to delay Coppermine, etc. A bad rap with whom? Techies? Who cares! The chipmakers already are not happy with Rambus. The boxmakers are equivical at best. The public doesn't know the difference. There have to be viable alternatives for Intel to be held accountable for their actions. If Intel holds the whole world for ransom until it is ready to ship product it wants, how it wants, the only ones to stop them from doing so are AMD/Athlon (fading every day) and companies like VIA. Otherwise Intel gets to make all the rules and everyone can howl all they want..it won't matter. Perception is reality.
