Yes, they were boyfriends. I didn't mention it because I wouldn't want to get accused by the language police of gay bashing. Its OK to laugh if a guy is shoved out the window, but if you laugh at a gay guy getting shoved out the window, I heard they sentence you to six weeks of sensitivity training seminars. I sure wouldn't trust a movie for historical accuracy. No doubt some clans dealt with England, some didn't. There was always skullduggery afoot in those days. One thing the movie didn't include about Robert the Bruce was he stabbed a rival clan leader who had cut a deal with England in front of the high altar of the church of Grey Friars in Dumfries. Some say it was a ritual murder, others disagree. Even if it wasn't ritual, it was a holy place. Ice water in the veins, or what?
