in small closed systems of a few million particles at near 0-G particles will behave "randomly". if you increase the size to a few light years, gravity will begin influencing the system, and you will see patterns form out of the void.
this requires no "guiding hand"

also, chaos theory is finding that a great many systems we have taken for granted as random are actually multple recursive feedback loops. (ie> a change of .1% at the start magnifies a 1000% difference at the end)

this has been called the butterfly effect (ie.> if the atmospheric pressure 3 yrs. ago in borneo was .00001 atmospheres more, floyd wouldn't be threatening the east coast now)
