Re: MSO's in Europe -- Cableco vs. Telco

Thread,
There is an interesting battle going on in the Netherlands between the cablecos and the dominant telco. It closely mirrors the situation going on in the US between AT&T and the ILECs.

Apparently KPN is the dominant twisted copper pair incumbent in the Netherlands. Well the four major Dutch cablecos; United Pan-Europe Communications, Palet Kabelcom, Castel, and Casema are all going to band together and create a national network that will offer cable telephony services. It's going to cost them several hundred million dollars to upgrade and will cover most of the country. This will be the first network to challenge the domination of KPN's control of the last mile.

I just thought it was surprisingly similar to what AT&T is doing in the US. As a matter of fact, as I've been posting upstream, the European battle for the last mile reflects a lot of what is happening in the United States.
