SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., Sep 17, 1999 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ --
Inprise Corporation (Nasdaq: INPR) today announced a worldwide
technology licensing agreement with Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP)
covering Inprise's VisiBroker CORBA object request broker (ORB).
According to the agreement, HP plans to integrate VisiBroker in its
Smart Internet Usage (SIU) 2.0 solution for Internet Service Providers
(ISPs). Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

gives service providers and enterprise-network managers a consolidated,
Internet data-mediation platform for billing, tracking and data mining
of subscriber utilization of network resources and services.

"Integrating Inprise's VisiBroker into HP's SIU solution set creates a
robust and open communications infrastructure that enables service
providers and enterprises to better manage distributed enterprise
applications," said Sanjay Uppal, general manager of HP's Internet
Infrastructure Operation. "With technologies such as VisiBroker, SIU
provides IP and data network service providers with the means to
monitor and charge customers according to actual usage of resources and
services in massively distributed telecommunications networks. SIU lays
the foundation for HP's e-services vision by helping service providers
target new services where they will be most effective while maintaining
high levels of customer care."

"Telecom ISPs need comprehensive solutions to understand their
subscribers' Internet usage patterns and to improve and optimize their
services," said Jeff Barca-Hall, chief technology officer for Inprise.
"Today, customers are demanding increasingly complex services and
solutions from ISPs. The addition of Inprise's VisiBroker ORB to the HP
SIU solution set will help IP operators better identify and track
subscriber communities of interest and focus on customer needs that
will help provide ISPs with the advantage they need to offer new and
more customer-centric bundled services."
