Not everybody from 1917 or older can be assumed free of suspicions against spinning history either way. I think that should be self-evident. So the 'Merlin Press' argument holds. However I didn't see what is largely surprising but the book title in the posting's contents. There may be different opinions about the extent of Spanish democracy before Franco, but not during Franco's regime. Also I think it is a secure assumption that the later Western allies could have contained Hitler much better if they had opposed his 'Condor legion' schemes.
If anybody knows ultimately why Spain didn't enter WWII on the fascist side, let me know ...
