Also I assume that it would have been worthwile to attack Gibraltar, and anyway act as a bridge and purge for German troops going to and returning from Africa. What about providing airfields, and - atlantic as well as mediterranean - harbors for submarines and the like? I am not a military expert, and don't pretend to be one. Also I don't think it is necessary to find a military rationale. For megalomanian Hitler it might simply have been important to show 'totality' - I think you understand.
