Job Trend Data for Realtime OS companies-who's winning?

FYI:

Awhile back I posted some job trend data here regarding
what the marketplace is seeking in the way of realtime
engineering positions. I wanted to update those numbers
for you now that the calendar year first quarter has ended.

These numbers are obtained by counting the actual job
postings on UseNet/Internet for engineers with a particular
"Realtime OS" skill.

If you look at just the traditional RTOS vendors you
have the following data:

-----------Q3,1995------------Q3/96------Q4/96------Q1/97
VxWorks-----23%----------------33%--------33%--------35%
pSOS--------30%----------------38%--------39%--------39%
QNX---------13%-----------------3%---------6%---------6%
VRTX--------20%----------------14%--------17%--------15%
OS/9--------13%----------------11%---------4%---------5%

Looking at the data this way it now looks like just a
two horse race between pSOS and VxWorks. MicroWare's (OS/9)
pursuit of the TV set-top strategy looks like it hasn't
worked when measured by job openings.

However, if we also look for companies advertising for
engineers with "Realtime Windows NT" or "Windows CE"
knowlegde or experience you have the following:

-----------Q3,1995------------Q3/96------Q4/96------Q1/97
VxWorks-----23%----------------27%--------22%--------21%
pSOS--------30%----------------32%--------26%--------23%
QNX---------13%-----------------3%---------4%---------3%
VRTX--------20%----------------12%--------12%---------9%
OS/9--------13%-----------------9%---------3%---------3%
Windows NT---1%----------------17%--------33%-------40%
WindowsCE----------------------------------------------1%

Total postings-----------------------------5,995-----10,213

The 1 percent showing for Windows CE is pretty remarkable
given that it has just come out of vapor state. It looks
like many companies are trying to get the jump on developing
Windows CE applications. This means it *already* has about
5% of the total of job postings for VxWorks programmers.

Does anyone else see a train come'n 'round the bend?

Remember you heard it here first.

You can also see the hugh jump in job postings on the
internet as more high-tech companies use it as a means
of finding talent.

The posting for Java programmers has also jumped dramatically,
but we'll save that discussion for another day.

Cheers,
Dave
