Now that the initial flurry has died down (on this thread at least) re: Handset sale. Perhaps the intent is to establish a 'chip' type arrangement. Qualcomm ASICs are not made by Q, they are produced by a third party to Qualcomm specs. I can see similar advantages to be had in the phone business.
I have been in favor of maintaining the connection to the handsets as design and function are closely coupled.

Time will tell.
