Stone Soup!!! Marcia Brown, I think. One of our favorite children's stories! How interesting that you heard it as a childless adult! The boys' Kindergarten teacher always made it with her class. She brought the stones and each child brought a few whatevers and threw it in.

Sort of a Tom Sawyer approach.
