Am I missing anything significant here? Can someone take the opposite side and make a case for RDRAM on the desktop today?

I can make a (weak) case from Intel's point of view. It goes: we want to put Rambus controllers on future CPUs for various reasons, so to make sure that works let's bite the bullet early and force the DRAM industry to produce DRDRAMs in high volumes.

That's not a customer benefit argument, obviously. In this scenario today's customers are unwitting pawns in Intel's longer term game.
