/usr/src/linux has a file called vmlinux. This is reworked by the install which configures the image as something called vmlinuz which is put in then root directory. Look for vmlinuz and name it vmlinuz.old. Rerun liloconfig or menuconfig and reset all the criteria you want. Remember to read the guide portions which tell you what to avoid. (be careful in the section where networking asks questions about ip masquerading routines) If you rerun liloconfig then it should have the old results in brackets for your choice. Menuconfig is an easy routine to follow and quick.

Of course you will have to reboot from a floppy with a root on the floppy or in ramdisk to do this. If the old vmlinuz is not there or deficient, then erase it and make a new one with the config tools.

If the image is too large to compile redo it with unecessary stuff or make it with "make bzimage" instead of "make zimage" The image may have to be copied to root after the compile, it would not hurt to check that the one in /usr/src/linux is the same as the one in root before proceeding with reboot.

Rerun lilo after all this to make sure the booter knows where the image is. IF you change the image you may rename the old one as vmlinuz.old and put a section in lilo.conf that points to vmlinuz.old just in case a new image does not work well.

Bonno Chansoso.
