I like the author's comment about Anglo-Saxon culture being suspicious of conspiracy, as the Anglo-Saxons have been instigators of intrigue for centuries. I agree that people who say that conspiracies never happen are more off base than the wildest-eyed nut. They deny human nature, ignore history, and often act as allies to the perpetrators. An honest historian (not the run of the mill courtier) is aware that history is often driven by conspiracy. To even use the word in polite company invites derision or calumny. The courtier historians and press have done a good job. Ask Julius Caesar if he believes conspiracies happen!
I have a friend who follows events in Russia closely. He sent me this e-mail. What is your take?
Dear Charlie, It might happen after all. This article says that Lebed might be appointed PM over the week end by Yeltsin. And with all the pressure for Yeltsin to resign, maybe the general who is surrounded by Monarchist aides will come to power in Russia. What leads me to think it might happen is that Boris Berezovsky supports him. This billionaire Jewish oligarch, has been the biggest financial backer of Yeltsin, and probably the one behind do many departures of so many prime ministers. When Primakov went after Berezkovsky, even though Primakov had the support of the Duma, he was sacked by Yeltsin. |
